I'm sure many parents will be feeling the effects of the summer holidays. No matter how many events, crafts or day trips you may organise i can guarantee you'll hear the words 'I'm bored'. Below I've compiled a list of things that might take some of that boredom away. I've tried my best to offer original, easy to set up and extremely affordable activities that an array of ages will enjoy.
Take a look at my top to budget summer holiday ideas:
Geocaching. A guaranteed family favourite. This free app takes you on family adventures in your local area. Little do you know, there are probably hundreds of small containers near your home, hidden in plain sight....and you have to find them. The app locates nearby caches and directs you to them. Take a pen so you can write your name and date on the paper inside the container. Sometimes there's little treasures inside the tub which you can trade. It's a fantastic way to spend quality time together and gets you walking in your local area. You can even hide your own cache.
Cook a 3 course meal for the family. If you're a foodie like me, you'll love this one. My son adores helping in the kitchen. Let your children choose a starter, main and dessert and take them to the shop to get the ingredients and spend the afternoon creating delicious food. Younger children will love helping to make their favourite meal whilst older children will likely manage themselves. It's also a great way to help kids learn valuable skills for life.
Go through old photo albums/print photos and make a scrap book. In an age where printed photos are increasingly sparce, going through old albums, talking about special memories or family members can really be nostalgic. You can print your own pictures and either make a scrapbook or a new album. It's also a great way to make sure some family photos remain safe. I think most people can agree they've lost special photos by not backing them up on your phone or computer.
Declutter old toys and sell them on Ebay, Vinted or a car boot sale. This is a great way to teach kids the value of money whilst also making space in the house! Let your children decide which toys they'd like to say goodbye to and give them the opportunity to buy something else with their earnt money or save it.
Make a height chart wall. This will likely become a nostalgic centrepiece in your home. We've been marking our son's height since he could stand. We use his bedroom door frame but you could use the wall behind a door or buy a height chart.
See family and friends. An obvious one you might think but I have family that I barely see. Uncles, parents, siblings, friends that live further away; I'm guilty of getting lost in day to day life that some relationships have drifted apart. Taking your children to see family is always winner.
Make your family tree. For history lovers this could be a week long adventure. I remember asking my grandparents all about family that I never got the chance to meet. You can search online or simply ask family members. See how far back in time you can get to and then document them by drawing your family tree.
Treasure Trails. Similar to geocaching, Treasure Trails is an adventure for the family. You buy the themed trail near your local area and solve clues to solve the treasure hunt. You can download the trail on their app or print a PDF map. This is a low cost activity that gets all ages in the local area solving mysteries.
Paint your bedroom or rearrange your furniture. I loved deciding on what my bedroom should look like as a child. The colour, the direction of my bed or where my toys should be stored. You could paint 1 wall or the whole room. Depending on how adventurous your feeling you might even take on the ceiling.
Grow your own butterfly garden. Insect Lore offers a fantastic service where you purchase caterpillars, their food and a home and watch them turn into butterflies. It's a brilliant way to see the life cycle of a butterfly and then release them into the wild!
Hopefully some of these ideas will give you and your kids the chance to make amazing summer memories, on a low cost budget. Why not give this list to your kids and see what they'd choose. Let me know in the comments what your best summer boredom busters are and if your take up any of these suggestions.
